Wisdom Series B: 15 Survival Level Themes

The Wisdom Series B is a set of 15 lessons intended for ESL beginners who are able to recognize their ABC's and can read English a little. There are 5 or 6 worksheets in each lesson. (If the student is unable to read English at all, then they should begin with Wisdom Series A.) Lessons in Series B include the following 15 themes which are useful for survival level English:

Wisdom Series B: Lesson Activities & Format

The Wisdom Series B consists of blackline masters that are reproducible (on a copier) for one school site location. Each ESL lesson includes the following activities: Vocabulary, Pronunciation, Actions, Emotions, Idioms, Conversations, Special Activities, and Bible Verses.

Teacher instructions for the Wisdom Series activities.

Lesson notes pertinent to each lesson.

Preview & Review picture worksheets that can also be a pre-test and/ or post-test.

History of the ESL Wisdom Series B

The ESL Wisdom Series B was created because we could not find an inexpensive, reproducible ESL curriculum to use in our own church-based, volunteer, low-budget ESL program. We wanted the curriculum:

To be "reproducible" because this is an affordable format that is very popular in education and homeschool today.

To include survival level English because our students were mostly raw beginners.

To include simple, inspirational Bible verses so we could offer our students the hope that is in Jesus Christ.

We're not sure how it happened, but we began to develop our own materials and gradually added other little pieces (tests, certificates, placement exam etc.) in order to meet additional needs in working with our students. We had much assistance from qualified, educated people as we developed these lessons.

We believe that the ESL Wisdom Series will be very useful in teaching ESL around the world. Hopefully the ESL Wisdom Series will give you a headstart advantage in your own ESL endeavors!

Professional Quality. The retail version of the ESL Wisdom Series has been designed and typeset by a professional desktop publisher, so it is attractive as well as functional. It makes your job as a teacher so much easier and helps your students learn all the more: primarily because of thousands of picture illustrations and the preview/review picture worksheets that enhance each lesson.

Professional Design & Review. The lesson format was designed by Martha Lane, a career ESL Professional who provided guidance and encouragement during the development of the Wisdom Series. We owe Martha much gratitude for her loving and generous assistance.

Classroom Tested. The ESL Wisdom Series B has been classroom tested. It has been closely reviewed by ESL and teaching professionals, and given a nod of approval. The preview/review worksheets make it possible to conduct your own on-site validation if such evaluation is necessary.

Reproducible. There are many excellent ESL curriculums available (secular and Bible-based), but we did not find any that matched our three criteria of reproducible, survival level, Bible based lessons. Reproducible materials were especially difficult to find. The ESL Wisdom series lessons are fully reproducible on a copier for one school site location.

Comprehensive. We also wanted each lesson to comprehensively cover the lesson theme so it might be truly useful to the student as a future resource. For this reason, the ESL Wisdom Series has been recommended for teachers who need to accomplish much in a short amount of time (such as short term mission workers.)

Teacher Notes. If you wish to stretch your class time, you can do that as well: there is enough material in any one lesson for several hours of classroom activities. The Teacher Notes give advice on how to stretch or shrink a lesson depending on the time allowed.
