ZipStrip... is a liquid furniture stripper. It is one of the oldest and most respected stripper brands in the US: an old reliable product. It can strip several layers of paint easily but doesn't harm the underlying wood. And, it also doesn't harm vinyl as far as we can tell. We have been using Zip Strip for a few years.

We initially tried ZipStrip on vinyl, out of desperation. We had a lovely vintage doll that had been painted. Since she was ruined already, we gave ZipStrip a try. Not only did it remove ALL the paint easily, it also cleaned that doll down to bare vinyl. She was beautiful! And, the ZipStrip didn't seem to do ANY damage to the vinyl. We had the doll for several months after that, so we were able to monitor the results and nothing undesirable happened to her.

Recently I had another beautiful vintage doll that was GRAY. It would not clean up, with soap or water or even strong bleach. The poor thing looked very dirty. I finally came to the conclusion that the old surface finish on the doll had gone bad. So, I used ZipStrip on the little cutie, and sure enough: she had perfectly lovely peachy pretty vinyl underneath the bad sealer. Because her hair and eyes are still perfect, the doll is in near mint condition now. Another ZipStrip success story!

ZipStrip is just as effective on modern vinyl as it is on vintage vinyl. The following instructions are written for reborners who are using the Berenguer dolls.

1. Use gloves! This is the kind of stripper that stings.
2. Use a cotton pad or paintbrush to apply the stripper.
3. Use a scrubbrush or toothpick to scrub the paint off.
4. Rinse under warm water. Reapply as needed.
5. Rinse the vinyl pieces well in warm sudsy water.
6. Allow to dry.

For reborns, you do need to strip the vinyl pieces completely: not just the painted areas. Vinyl dolls do have a surface sealer on them, so you need to remove the invisible sealer as well as the paint that you can see. Otherwise, when you tint the doll later you might end up with streaks where the sealer has not been removed.

You don't need to remove the lip paint if you don't want to. Just work around it.

We also have cheap toothbrushes in the shop that you can use for scrubbing. They aren't very good as toothbrushes since they are hard bristle (I don't know if anyone can tolerate hard toothbrushes on their teeth.) These toothbrushes do make great scrubbies and they are so cheap there's no guilt in throwing them away when finished. ZipStrip does react with regular plastic, such as the plastic handles on brushes.
