Permanent Lightfast Transparent Oil Paints
Selected for Vinyl Dolls

HIGHEST QUALITY PERMANENT COLORS ~
We have selected the Scuola oil colors because they are permanent, top quality, lightfast, nontoxic, transparent, affordable, creamy rich oil paint colors. I absolutely love working with these wonderful oil paints!

Scuola oil paints contain the best quality pigments that are available. During industry testing they have even surpassed some of the top brands. Yet, Scuola paints are more affordable because they are not imported, which does add considerably to the cost.

HIGHEST LIGHTFAST RATING ~ Scuola paints have the highest "lightfast" rating possible. This does not mean they cannot fade under abusive conditions but it DOES mean that Scuola oil paints have the highest potential for retaining their true color permanently, if the doll is cared for properly. Any kind of RED dye, ink, toner or other red pigments are especially susceptible to fading in sunlight: these Scuola colors provide assurance that you have selected the best possible lightfast colors for your heirloom dolls.

TRANSPARENT OILS ~ YES, these oil paints are actually transparent or semi-transparent. Even the black color is transparent. (The only colors which are not transparent are Flesh and White.) We intentionally selected transparent colors from the Scuola color chart. Transparency rating is determined by the pigments that are used. We could have purchased a red Scuola oil paint that was opaque, but we think the transparent colors have more "glow", and provide superior lifelike quality when used on vinyl. Transparent oil paints will *enhance* the lovely translucent Berenguer vinyl rather than obscuring it.

NON-TOXIC ~ Because the Reborn art is a "hands-on" type of art, it's important to know that the pigments you work with are non-toxic. Artists have been known to develop health problems and even nerve damage due to exposure to toxic pigments in their paint. YES, the Scuola Paints are NON-TOXIC.

Even though the Scuola paints are non-toxic, we do recommend using gloves as much as possible. Our shop has latex gloves in four sizes. (If the gloves fit good, you are more likely to use them.) We recommend using makeup sponges as well, in addition to brushes. The sponges give wonderful flexibility: better than fingers, and saves you from exposure to the paints.

SAFFLOWER OIL MEDIUM ~ We don't stock the oil mediums for thinning paint. You can use either Linseed oil or Safflower Oil medium. Artist oil mediums are available at any artist supply store. Safflower oil is better than Linseed oil because it doesn't have as much of a yellowing effect. Linseed oil has more yellow in it, which is likely to become noticeable in a few years. Whatever oil medium you might use: be sure to use it sparingly or the paints will never dry at all. It's better to get along without thinning the paint, if you can.

NOTE: ~ Do not use Safflower cooking oil, it is not the same thing. Cooking oil will turn gummy and will not dry.

CAUTION: Do not use too much oil medium to thin your oil paints, or they will not dry. Oil mediums cannot be used as a "wash." LET ME REPEAT THAT, because I'm alarmed to hear that reborners are using oil medium as they would use water with watercolor paints... OIL MEDIUMS CANNOT BE USED AS A WASH! It will never dry, and you will have much more risk from eventual bruising because the paints will never cure or stabilize in the vinyl.

BABY OIL is NEVER recommended by professionals, because it is an absolutely non-drying oil, petroleum-based, intended as a lubricant. The Scuola manufacturer says that baby oil will spoil the paint.

Because baby oil never dries, it is possible that the oil tint on the doll would never stabilize. The baby oil will continue to migrate (leech) through the vinyl year after year. Actually, any application of color to vinyl has the potential for migration, but we don't need to ENCOURAGE the problem. There is definitely more risk with baby oil.

NOTE: The Scuola colors are intense and permanent so if you have not used oil paints before, approach the doll CAUTIOUSLY and apply very SMALL amounts until you are comfortable with how these oil paints work on vinyl. It's a very good idea to use a "test" doll first!

COMPATIBLE ~ Scuola oil paints can be mixed with other brands of oil paints or oil mediums, as long as they do NOT contain water. The Scuola paints come in 40.6 ml tubes, which is a generous medium size.

WONDERFUL TO WORK WITH ~ I really enjoyed working with these creamy, smooth colors. Absolutely a joy to work with, there's no doubt that Quality makes a big difference with oil paints. The Scuola oils glide on easily, no streaking, and soak in quickly. I allowed 4 weeks to dry & cure, just to be safe. Don't apply any kind of surface sealer until you're very sure the oils are cured. Some people set their dolls outside on a warm day to try to help it along.

COLOR SELECTION ~ We offer a SET of 10 basic Scuola oil colors (includes all colors shown on the order form below.) With the complete set you should be able to mix the colors that you want. Or, you may purchase individual tubes of the colors that you prefer.

ALIZARIN CRIMSON and RED ROSE DEEP have been very popular for blushing. PERMANENT RED is also useful for blushing: it has a slight orange cast and is appropriate for ethnic dolls with dark or olive skin tones.

The FLESH color paint is not the Scuola brand: it costs more but the color is so good for reborns we decided to stock it. The Flesh color is also top quality, lightfast, nontoxic and permanent.

To MIX your own flesh color, use 1 part BURNT SIENNA and 1 part TITANIUM WHITE and just a touch of PERMANENT RED (or ALIZARIN CRIMSON.) This formula was provided to us by the Scuola manufacturer: the formula matches the more expensive pre-mixed Flesh color.

We selected several brown oil paints so you will have the colors you need to mix ethnic skin tones.

PRUSSIAN BLUE or QUINACRIDONE VIOLET are useful for adding the blueish appearance of veins at the doll's temples, skin creases, etc. I've heard good comments about the Prussian Blue, especially.

TOP QUALITY ~ There has been a persistent rumor that the Scuola paints are not top quality. This rumor is badly informed. The Scuola paints are made with top quality ingredients; exactly the same ingredients as the manufacturer's "professional" grade of oil paints. The Scuola grade does not have as much pigment added, that's the ONLY difference. And since the Reborners are thinning the paints anyway (diluting the colors), it doesn't even make sense that we should stock the professional grade. The Scuola colors are very rich, deeply intense colors so I think the pro grade would only present more problems for reborners. Also, the pro grade is MUCH more expensive than the Scuola.

So, all things considered, I think Scuola is absolutely the best choice in oil paints for the Reborn artists. The quality is superb, and the manufacturer has assured us that these colors are permanent, lightfast and durable. I haven't been able to find such technical information on other brands that I have researched. For me, it's a relief to know that I've selected paints I can rely on, because I do want to provide my customers with products that endure under reasonable conditions.

MIX ANY COLOR YOU WANT ~ To learn how to create ANY color you could ever want, consult the Color Wheel links:

When you look at these color wheels, you will learn that mixing beautiful, vibrant colors is more complex than merely adding white or black. Knowing how to mix fabulous colors is an important part of becoming proficient with oil paints. Even though we apply the paint to vinyl dolls, the Reborn Artist has just as much to learn about oil paints as any canvas artist.
