Gallery Glass Paints by Plaid

DELICATE LIP COLORS ~ We have selected several Gallery Glass paint colors which are appropriate for lip colors on infant dolls.

PREPARE THE VINYL ~ First you must remove the original lip color with a solvent or stripper. Most reborn artists remove all paint from the vinyl doll pieces, and clean thoroughly in hot sudsy water in order to remove any surface finish on the vinyl. This is the first step.

(When you are ready to paint facial features, you might want to save the lips for last since it would be easy to damage your work when you start on the eyes.)

SEVERAL THIN COATS ~ Apply the glass paint in thin layers and allow to dry in-between coats. All of the Gallery Glass colors are sheer and delicate; even the darker colors such as Berry Red must be layered in order to get a darker hue. You will probably need to apply several coats until you achieve the amount of color you want.

MIXING COLORS ~ If you want to mix colors, it is better to paint the layers with different colors, than to mix the paints. If you try to mix the paints, the colors tend to streak when applied to the doll. These glass paints don't mix very well.

MANICURES, TOO ~ The ivory cream is for doing the doll's manicure. Use the ivory cream for fingernails and toenails. Spring Rose is also very sheer and pale: it could be used for manicures as well.

FINISH WITH SEALERS ~ Finally, finish the lips and fingers/toes with one of our Sealers as the topcoat. The sealers are available as gloss, satin or matte finish.

SPECIAL NOTE ~ NOTE: do not use oil paints to color the lips on vinyl dolls. The oil colors do bleed: they will spread into the surrounding area and look messy. You can apply a very light tint of oil paint color to the lips before you apply the glass paint. This underlying blush tint looks good and won't cause problems if it's just a bare hint of color. (Allow time to dry before you apply glass paint over the blush.)

EYE COLORS, TOO? ~ AND!! Here's another unique idea. One of my customers wanted to change the eye color on an 8" Lots to Love doll. Rather than swapping the eyes on such a tiny doll, she applied cocoa brown glass paint to the doll's eyes. She applied the color very carefully, and she was thrilled with the results. On such a small doll, the paint application isn't obvious, but it effectively changed the color of the doll's eyes. So, we do offer the Cocoa Brown color as well, for those who want to experiment with eye painting.

Disclaimer: The methods for making Reborn vinyl dolls are experimental. We try to offer the best materials that are available. However, we cannot make any guarantees or warrantees about results, partly because results are in your hands. And, the long term affects of these paints on vinyl are not yet known. Therefore, use of these products is subject to your own discretion and your own risk.
