Synthetic Hair for Rooting Vintage Dolls

This page offers synthetic hair pieces for rooting VINTAGE dolls. I originally wanted these pieces in order to replace the tails on Crissy dolls, but they are useful for re-rooting old dolls, especially vintage dolls from the late 50's and 1960's. We do not recommend these hair pieces for Reborn dolls. They can be used for fashion doll reroots. COLOR MATCHING. Our color selection is limited: we do not have access to a full spectrum so if you are trying to match color/texture exactly you would do better to look at thrift stores or bargain dolls at toy stores (or wig stores) in order to find a color match. Sometimes you can match your old doll if you blend two colors together.
STYLING. Our synthetic hair tails can be styled like real hair. We have used rollers and our Clear Ice gel. (We have not tried to use electric rollers.) You can use a hair dryer to heat the hair and mold it to the rollers, BUT be careful not to overheat the hair. You cannot use a curling iron with these hair tails. Some people have told us they used the boiling water method to curl these hair pieces and it worked fine for them: we haven't tried this method for ourselves. SYNTHETIC FIBERS. These synthetic hair hanks are made of kanekalon or toyakalon or modacrylic. We are stocking mostly the DIANA brand now, which is smooth with a pretty shine. REROOTING VINTAGE DOLLS. We absolutely LOVE the makeovers that have been done, using our gorgeous hair tails. At the bottom of this page, you will find more information on rerooting and makeovers. NOTE: Craft items such as wigs and hairpieces are not returnable.
18-19" Short Hair Tails
SHORT HAIR TAILS. Our hair packages are available in short length or extra long as indicated for each. Short tails are approx. 18 to 19 inches long, and the extra long pieces are approx. 24 inches. Short tails have more bulk and are packaged with TWO tails. (The extra long are bundled as one tail.) The photo below shows pale Platinum blonde again, which is recommended for the Ideal Velvet dolls, along with our light Auburn red that is popular for the Ideal Crissy dolls. We also have soft pink, which is good for some of the vintage fashion dolls as well as modern fashion dolls. Plus, we have some wild colors that can be a lot of fun, for special custom looks: cherry red, bright blue and orange.
24" Long Hair Tails
LONG HAIR TAILS. Our hair packages are available in regular length or extra long as indicated for each. Extra long hair tails are bundled as one hank, with a length of approximately 24 inches (Short tails are 18-19 inches.) We have have 12 colors in the extra long length, as shown below. The photo above shows AUBURN RED for vintage Crissy dolls, and BLACK. These hair pieces cost a bit more: they have extra-lustrous color and weight. The photo above shows (Left to right)... Pale Blonde, Honey Blonde, Vivid Blue, and Raspberry Rose. These hair tails are glossy and have a Yaki texture, which is not as smooth. We recommend these hair tails for re-rooting the vintage dolls. Honey Blonde is one of our favorite picks for re-rooting vintage dolls of the 50's and 60's, although many of the colors on this page are appropriate for vintage dolls.

I have used the hair pieces on this page to re-root Baby Crissy. I mixed hair fibers from auburn and ginger tails in order to custom blend a color that matched her original hair color exactly. My doll's bangs had been cut, so I trimmed the hair plugs down to the scalp in that area and rerooted most of the front. The project took a couple of hours at the most, and she looks like new. Here is the doll I re-rooted:
The Crissy Doctors rerooted Baby Crissy as a blonde. The Crissy Doctors used three packages of synthetic fiber on this doll: two packages for re-rooting, and one package to replace the tail. The tail shown is the short length. STYLING THE HAIR. The hair cannot be curled with a curling iron because it melts. But one lady who has been experimenting with these hair pieces says they do curl very nicely using the hot water method. To do this, you roll the hair on straws (secure with a bobby pin) or use perm rollers or small rollers. Then pour very hot water over the hair. Some people even use boiling water but sometimes the heat can ruin hair fibers so you might want to test a piece to find out how much heat it can withstand. Allow the hair to dry and you will have nice curls. (Curl the hair AFTER it's been rooted into the doll of course.) REPLACEMENT TAILS FOR CRISSY DOLLS. This photo shows the regular length RED tail on Baby Crissy, which is exactly the right length as a replacement for her original tail. (Photo is courtesy of the Crissy doctors.) Our replacement tails work well for the fashion dolls as well. Pale blonde is perfect for Velvet. Dark Brown #4 is selected for Mia. We don't have a color that is appropriate for Kerry: her hair is a very unusual shade of blonde.
We cannot assist with tail replacement, but it's not difficult to replace Baby Crissy's tail because her head or arms come off easily so you can reach inside to work. We do recommend our HEMOSTAT tools, especially for replacing the tail on the fashion dolls, because the hemostats can reach down where the windup gear is, inside the doll.
Clear Ice Gel for Styling Doll Hair
BRAND NAMES.Recently we have been switching to the Diana brand because it is a nice hair tail at very low cost for the price. We have indicated some of the brand names below, for people who prefer certain brands. DYE LOTS.Please understand that the hair color does vary with every shipment so be sure to buy all you need for your project because the next dye lot might not be exactly the same color. If any of you do knitting or crochet then you know how important it is to match dye lots. NOVELTY COLORS. We have Red, Orange, Blue and Pink hair colors in stock. These are specialty hair colors and the supplier does not stock as much variety. Sometimes we are able to get short tails and other times long tails. We haven't been able to consistently get both lengths, so in the novelty colors we don't specify the length. We will send what we can get. It's approximately the same amount of hair in each package anyway.
STYLING TIP: To tame the hair when you are finished doing the re-rooting, you can place a wet towel or washcloth over the doll's head and iron the wet towel with a steam iron. The steam will flatten the hair so it will lay flat on the doll's head. Style the hair as much as possible before steaming it, so the hair will end up laying flat where you want it to be.
